Description: This dataset contains the zone boundaries for Cape Byron, Solitary Islands, Port Stephens - Great Lakes, Jervis Bay, Lord Howe Island and Batemans Marine Parks, and NSW Aquatic Reserves, as described in NSW Marine Estate Management (Management Rules) Regulation 1999 and NSW Government Gazette (Aquatic Reserves). Offshore boundaries are derived from the AMSIS 3 nautical mile state waters boundary and were updated in December 2013. Estuarine boundaries have been estimated from cadastral lot features, topographic features and digitised from aerial imagery. Generally, those estuarine boundaries which appeared to align with recent aerial imagery were used, to improve the accuracy of the layer. These should be used as a guide only as these boundaries are dynamic and are likely to change over time. Where practical, creeks have been captured in this layer until their tidal limits. Tidal limits of creeks have been estimated from DNR 2006 Survey of Mangrove and Tidal limits in NSW estuaries. Exceptions may occur where no data is available or creeks appear to be man-made drainage canals. Coastline boundaries are a combination of cadastral lot and topographic features. Generally the furthest landward boundary was used although in some areas the coastline feature that most closely resembled actual features as they appear in aerial imagery was adopted. Small coastal islets and bomboras are generally not shown in this layer unless they are referred to in zone descriptions. Aquaculture lease boundaries are taken from the DPI maintained database. For ease of use, not all OISAS priority areas in Sanctuary Zones have been mapped herein as Special Purpose Zones. Data should not be used for navigational purposes. Attributes include: NAME: the name of the protected area. TYPE: the type of protected area according to the protected area establishment mechanism. TYPE_ABBR: the abbreviation of the TYPE. TYPE abbreviations: AQR = Aquatic Reserve MP = Marine Park IUCN: the IUCN protected area management category ascribed by the Managing authority. IUCN definitions: IA = Strict Nature Reserve: managed mainly for science; IB = Wilderness Area: managed mainly for wilderness protection; II = National Park: managed mainly for ecosystem protection; III = Natural Monument: managed mainly for conservation of specific natural features; IV = Habitat / Species Management Area: managed mainly for conservation through management intervention; V = Protected Landscape / Seascape: managed mainly for landscape/seascape conservation and recreation; VI = Managed Resource Protected Area: managed mainly for the sustainable use of natural ecosystems. NA = (Not applicable) - Denotes an area that does not meet the NRS criteria or the IUCN definition of a protected area but has management complimentary to the NRS. NRS_MPA: This attribute indicates whether the protected area meets the standard for inclusion in the NRSMPA or is managed for nature conservation without meeting the NRSMPA standard. For marine reserves refer to the “Guidelines for Establishing the National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas (NRSMPA) NRS_MPA code definitions: "Y" = Yes. The sea has been assessed as a protected area that meets the standard for inclusion in the NRSMPA. "N" = No. The sea has been assessed as not meeting the standard for inclusion in the NRSMPA. It is managed for nature conservation without meeting the NRSMPA standard. "ND" = Not Determined. The sea is managed for nature conservation although it has not been assessed to determine if it meets the standard for inclusion in the NRSMPA. GIS_AREA: area in hectares based on current spatial data and an Albers equal area projection for Australia. It is this field that is used to calculate the statistics provided in spreadsheets at: www.environment.gov.au/capad/ REPT_AREA: figure used for reporting area of polygon (e.g. website and educational material) GAZ_DATE: the first gazettal or proclamation date that established any protected area at this site. A default date of 01/01/1900 is applied for undated and unlabelled polygons supplied to the department. LATEST_GAZ: the date of the most recent gazettal or proclamation to amend the protected area. It can be the same date as the GAZ_DATE. DATASOURCE: Describes the source of the data for the protected area. DATASOURCE abbreviations: NSW_DPI = NSW Department of Primary Industries COMMENTS: Zone name and type ZONE_TYPE: This is a concatenation of the ZONE (usually found in the COMMENTS field) and IUCN categories – for allocating symbology when mapping the reserve. EPBC: This identifies if the reserve can be considered under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). It will be used to identify Commonwealth features for inclusion in the Protected Matters Search Tool. EPBC code descriptions: Commonwealth = Commonwealth reserve (either a Commonwealth Marine Reserve, Marine Park, Marine Sanctuary, National Park (Commonwealth)) – as outlined in Section 342 of the Act. State = State managed reserve – as supplied by State/Territory authority PA_ID_grp: The first three digits of the PA_ID code that identifies unique protected areas. It does not change between versions of CAPAD.
