Description: This data contains locations of waste facilities that are required to report waste movements to the EPA under s88 of the Protection of the Environment Operations Act (POEO) 1997 and Part 2, Part 3 and Part 11 of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Waste) Regulation 2014. The facilities are active as of the version date field specified in the attribute table.
The data set is divided into two types of facilities: Landfills and Resource Recovery.
Landfills
A category is assigned to each facility that indicates the potential capacity available in meters cubed at the time of the version date field specified in the attribute table. The category assigned is based on assumptions and other self-reported data provided by each facility; a facility should always be contacted to confirm capacity when disposal is needed. It is indicated whether each facility is required to hold an Environment Protection Licence. It is also indicated whether each facility is licensed to receive asbestos and putrescible material. Further, it is indicated whether each facility is required to pay the waste levy.
Resource Recovery
Two different categories are provided for each facility.
1. Authorised Amount Category (tonnes): a stockpile limit as indicated on the facility’s licence.
2. Annual Throughput Category (tonnes per annum): waste received at the facility, which is based on data reported in the previous financial year.
It is indicated whether each facility is required to hold an Environment Protection Licence, whether it is required to report waste movements, and whether it is required to pay the waste levy.
Exclusion Examples
The data set does not capture every facility that handles waste in NSW. Some examples of excluded facilities are:
1) Resource recovery facilities that are below limits set in the POEO Act and/or located in the non-levied area of NSW.
2) Facilities/sites on which waste is entirely managed on-site, i.e. material does not enter or exit and is repurposed on site.
3) Facilities that handle primarily liquid wastes or specific hazardous materials.
